Robert Chew
Robert's interest in software development began in 1980 when he wrote a computer program to solve linear optimization problems using the simplex algorithm. Since then, Robert is passionate about promoting the infocomm industry in Singapore.
Robert's spirit for volunteering originated long before his retirement as an executive partner from Accenture. He was a member of the ICT Working Group, within the Services Sub-Committee of the Economic Review Committee (ERC 2001/2), and a member of the iN2015 Infocomm Infrastructure, Services and Technology Sub-Committee. Robert facilitated and formulated Singapore IT Federation’s (SiTF) recommendations to the iN2015 vision and strategy. In 2008, he chaired the National Infocomm Awards (NIA) 2008 sub-committee for most innovative use of IT.
While serving as a council member of SITF and as the Chairman of its Wireless Chapter in 2004-2006, Robert introduced programming and application development initiatives such as the “I Want Windows Mobile” series of competitions and seminars, organized jointly with Microsoft. As one of the early champions of mobile computing, he launched the annual “WOW!” events , the first of which was part of the telcos’ effort to introduce 3G services and subsequently to promote mobile user applications in industries such as manufacturing, logistics and healthcare.
Robert continues to engage the infocomm industry by volunteering his time to chair the IT Standards Committee (ITSC), and to serve on the National Grid Advisory Council (NGAC) and the Technology Committee in the Singapore Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (SCCCI). He leverages his volunteer roles to promote interest in computer science and programming, particularly among the young. At ITSC, he initiated codeXtreme Apps programming competition - a 24hr programming competition; its inaugural event in 2007 was carried out in collaboration with Google using Web 2.0 technologies. The competition was the first of its kind in Singapore and the region.
Robert also serves on the boards of OpenNet, Alexandra Health Pte Ltd (AHPL), Integrated Health Information Systems Pte Ltd (IHIS), SATA, TOUCH Community Services, Dover Park Hospice and the Lien Centre for Social Innovation. He is currently serving his second term as ITSC chairman.
Robert is a strong advocate of IT standards and believes that IT standards deliver significant value to the IT industry. He believes that participating and leading in IT standards development helps position Singapore as a leading infocomm nation globally
