Mr Goh Beng Yeow
Beng Yeow’s first call to a leadership role came at the young age of 11, when he headed the Science Club of Kuo Chuan Presbyterian Primary. His avid interest in Mathematics and Science later blossomed into a firm knowledge of Information Technology (IT) in his secondary school days. At Presbyterian High School, he was appointed as Chairman of the Computer Club, where he initiated and created the school’s first Internet Webpage in 1996. Beng Yeow also trained and guided his club members to represent the school in Programming-related Competitions as well as in the prestigious Micromouse Competition.
At the age of 17, Beng Yeow was appointed student ambassador of the International Schools CyberFair (http://www.gsn.org/cf/index.html), an international webpage design competition which saw official entries from more than 500,000 students from 2,500 schools in 75 countries around the world. As an ambassador, Beng Yeow helped initiate local secondary school students to Web Projects which entailed research on their local communities and the use of WebPages and Internet Technologies to present their findings. However, his involvement with this project did not end there. Respected and recognized as a team builder and leader, Beng Yeow voluntarily continued his role as Ambassador and personally funded this educational IT project for 5 years.
While pursuing a Diploma in Multimedia Systems Engineering (now known as Multimedia and Infocomm Technology) at the School of Engineering in Nanyang Polytechnic, he was an active member in the School of Engineering Club. Beng Yeow assisted the club in IT-related workshops for Secondary School students and was part of a committee which organized IT-related competitions for Secondary School students. He was later elected as the President of the Internet Club during his second and third year of studies. Under his presidency, the Internet Club represented the Polytechnic in National-level Competitions, and provided IT-related workshops for fellow NYP students as well as Secondary Students. The club also organised IT-related competitions to promote the use of IT.
In 1999, working hand-in-hand with the Health Promotion Board, Beng Yeow chaired the organising committee of the National Multimedia Anti-Smoking Competition which used IT to promote anti-smoking during the National Smoking Control Campaign.
During his final year in Nanyang Polytechnic in 2000, Beng Yeow founded PDALive.com Pte Ltd (http://www.pdalive.com) amidst the dot.com boom, a start-up specialising in handheld and mobililty solutions. The company ran a PDA resource website for PDA users as well as develop custom handheld and mobility Enterprise solutions as its main source of revenue.
Three years since his establishment of PDALive.com Pte Ltd, Beng Yeow has become a seasoned player in the Singapore IT industry, having weathered the dot.com fervour and consequent crash while juggling between National Service and the operations of his company. In order to meet new challenges in the rapidly changing environment, Beng Yeow has undertaken a revamp of his business and has rebranded PDALive.com Pte Ltd as XinDesign Pte Ltd (http://www.xindesign.com). XinDesign Pte Ltd specialises in Web, Mobile and Handheld Solutions Development and integrates the latest technologies with corporate marketing expertise in order to provide a new business solution for valued clients.
Beng Yeow furthered his education by pursuing a Degree in Economics, at Singapore Management University in August 2003 following the completion of his National Service. Ever the technopreneur, he has continued to conduct business while studying, just like when he first started out in 2000.
IT Youth Award Winner Goh Beng Yeow has fitted into the roles of Student Leader, Student ambassador and youth entrepreneur and reminded us of the excitement, passion and fun that one can have in integrating interest and career.
