Mr Yeo Zhi Quan
Zhiquan specialises in augmenting the local PalmOS developer scene by writing several useful programs that can benefit the average user. He has also written (developed) several shareware programs for the Palm Computing Platform.
Most notably, Zhiquan has worked with the makers of a highly successful television programme, MakanSutra, on porting the food guide to the Palm Computing Platform.
Proficient in the features of the PalmOS, Zhiquan has written a guide to it for use by both beginners and seasoned user. His proficiency in Microsoft Visual Basic has enabled him to develop desktop companions for some of his programs and also let him help his fellow students when they have problems during programming class.
As an aid to tourists in Singapore, Zhiquan has written Hand eGuide Singapore, a tourist guide contained on a PalmOS device. has worked on an upgrade that will include more information as well as a desktop component for constant updates.
Many of Zhiquan's programs have been praised by users for being useful and having user-friendly interfaces. Most notably, Scriblet, his first freeware application, has been awarded 5 cows at Tucows.com, an application rating facility.
Zhiquan’s experience working with MakanSutra Pte Ltd in developing their software has given him new ideas and ways on how to make his future applications better. This knowledge and experience with working for a major company has shown its positive influence in an expense tracking application that he was developing.
In this age of information technology, the proliferation of these softwares that Zhiquan has done will have a long-term impact on Singapore’s economy. With the greater emphasis on the Knowledge Based Economy (KBE), Zhiquan’s work will contribute much towards it, making Singapore a more visible player in the PDA arena.
Zhiquan’s greatest asset is his age. Young and full of energy, his age and his willingness to learn and obtain feedback holds no boundary for him. Zhiquan has a tremendous potential in that he is very interested developing PalmOS applications.
Zhiquan’s experience with the PalmOS has also led to him being an active member of the Palm User Group, Singapore (SPUG) and has also led to him being appointed a forum moderator.
Being an active PalmOS user in school, Zhiquan has helped to port the school calendar to the PalmOS for the benefit of other PDA users. He has also recently signed up as an e-ambassador to help others experience the benefits of Information Technology.
Zhiquan also reads widely, especially computer magazines and publications to keep himself abreast of technological advancements and new techniques. His interest in reading extra material and pre-release information also gives him a better idea how to develop applications for a certain platform and how to make it backward compatible.
With the proliferation of IT, especially with the use of PDAs, in many aspects of our lives, awarding an aspiring programmer such as Zhiquan, would urge him to write even better programmes. This only also serves to gives recognition not only to him but also to the PDA community in Singapore.
