SingPost Site Visit

On 29 May 2008, the SCS Vice-President, Mr Alphonsus Pang & SCS members were treated to a tour at SingPost centre where they witnessed how tons of mails were being sorted out.
SingPost’s corporate communications manager, Ms Chin Ying Duan, kick-started the site visit by sharing with everybody useful information for sending out mails as well as funny anecdotes of strange mails that they received. The most memorable anecdote had to be the person who managed to insert a fully blown balloon in the mailbox!

Later she gave interesting insights on how SingPost has re-invented themselves by expanding their range of services from booking movie tickets, personalized stamps to having an online shopping service i.e Vpost. There was also an interesting showcase of their new multi-functional S.A.M which even allows people to return library books at a nominal charge.

After a short tea break, the members proceeded to the SingPost mail processing rooms. It was fascinating to see various types of mail sorting machines; some were spiral-shaped, others were humongous tumblers & conveyor belts. There were so many letters that they resembled a crate when tightly packed together. Besides that, the guides were patient to explain the functions of each machine.

At the end of the tour, members were shown the data entry room where workers efficiently input postal codes with an astonishing rate of 98-100% accuracy!

The SingPost site visit was definitely educational & an eye-opener to a supposedly mundane task that Singaporeans take for granted.
