Mr Tan Tong Hai

IT Leader of the Year, 2015

A veteran with 26 years of experience in the regional information technology (IT), Internet and e-commerce industries, Tong Hai is a firm believer of the transformative power of IT in benefitting businesses, the community and the nation.

Tong Hai joined StarHub as its Chief Operating Officer in 2009, overseeing everyday operations of the company. Today, as the company's Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director, Tong Hai is an inspirational leader with immense industry knowledge.

Under his leadership, StarHub works with both solution providers and customers to create win-win partnerships for all. Believing that better outcomes can be achieved through teamwork, he has led StarHub to strategic partnerships with cloud solution providers to deliver cost-effective solutions to serve small and medium-sized enterprises. StarHub has also partnered with big data analytics solution providers and government agencies to better serve various groups of the community such as citizens, immigrants, foreign workers and visitors.

Tong Hai oversaw initiatives such as StarHub's Golden Gurus programme, which empowers tech-savvy senior citizens to help their peers by imparting their IT knowledge, and MySmartEye, an award-winning mobile app which helps the visually impaired to see their surroundings with the aid of a volunteer network.

His efforts led to StarHub launching Singapore's first and only free local sports cable channel SuperSports Arena, which is available to all households on multiple devices, allowing Singaporeans to cheer on local athletes anytime, anywhere while helping the athletes grow a wider base of supporters.

Prior to joining StarHub, Tong Hai was the President and CEO of Singapore Computer Systems (SCS) and Pacific Internet (PacNet). He was instrumental in turning both companies around when he was at their helms. At SCS, he was part of the leadership team in the oneMeridian consortium which rolled out the Standard ICT Operating Environment (SOEasy) for the public sector.

Tong Hai also led the implementation of the Central Identification and Registration Information System (CIRIS) for the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) which was selected as the top e-Government project at the 2008 Infocomm Singapore Awards.

Tong Hai understands that IT and education are two of life's equalisers for the next generation, and he is personally committed to nurturing the youth and future IT leaders as Chairman of Nanyang Polytechnic's Board of Governors; and through his participation in programmes such as Singapore Computer Society's YES! Youth Engagement Series, National University of Singapore's IT Leadership Programme and SMU's Building Better IT Leaders initiative.
