Developing Our People - The IBMer
At IBM, we recognize the significant role IBMers play in helping to transform the company. We continuously evolve our personal and professional development programs, performance measurements systems and ways of working so that we hire, support, train and retain people who embrace our values and engage in our increasingly collaborative and agile environment.
In 2016 for example, we reinvented our performance review system by co-creating our review system alongside 380,000 of our employees globally. Under our new performance review system, our employees are now assessed against five dimensions including "business results", "client success", "innovation", "responsibility to others" and "skills". Just as goals can be set and adjusted anytime during the year, managers are also welcomed to discuss their team's performance frequently.
With skills as one of the five dimensions for assessment, we had also built a cognitive-based, mobile friendly and personalised learning platform known as YOURLearning where IBMers can continuously find opportunities to learn, and build the right skills towards their current and future developmental goals. This platform provides frameworks to help them build industry depth, skills and leadership capabilities easily.
Innovation - For our clients, the world and each other
In 2016, we identified the need to create and market real cognitive solutions and saw value in helping IBMers adopt new methods of work and tools for collaboration. We applied modern tools like Box, Slack, Mural and AGILE/IBM Design-thinking methodologies to drive these new ways of collaboration and communication. IBMers are now able to operate effectively on cloud based, mobile platforms allowing them to have more flexibility in where and how they choose to work.
We also rolled out the Cognitive Build Initiative to provide opportunities for our employees to generate cognitive ideas of their own to apply in our internal processes and for our clients. The initiative attracted over 3,000 teams.
Last year, we opened IBM Studios Singapore, a new design center to help clients reinvent their business for the digital age and develop individualized experiences through a combination of cognitive capabilities and experience design. Located in the Marina Bay Financial Centre, clients get to work side-by-side with our teams of IBM creative designers, researchers, digital strategists, analytics and cognitive solution experts to analyze their business challenges and co-create new business models and offerings.
As a corporate citizen of Singapore, we approach local societal challenges as we would any engagement - by applying our talent and technology to innovative solutions for education, economic development, environmental sustainability, healthcare and more. Among many other initiatives, we recently invited the Ministry of Health to a workshop, led by our subject matter experts from the IBM Industry Academy and the IBM Research Institute, to discuss the aging issues in Singapore.
