The Leading Infocomm and
Digital Media Professional Society in Singapore

Mr Liu Junhua

IT Youth, 2013

Junhua graduated with a Diploma in Information Technology from Singapore Polytechnic (SP) and is now an undergraduate in the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD).

While Junhua was in SP, his final year project involved the improving of the emergency handling systems for crime and fire cases and was conducted in collaboration with Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), Singapore Police Force (SPF) and Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF). He led his team, Viva Studio to win the 2011 SiTF Award (Tertiary Student), SLA Spatial Challenge 2011 First Price (Tertiary Student Category) and several other awards.

During his internship at Microsoft Singapore, Junhua worked on the project Classroom of the Future (COTF) 3.0. It was a collaborative initiative by Infocomm Development Authority (IDA), aiming to explore the possibilities of key technologies and solutions for teaching and learning. Beyond academics, Junhua also developed IT solutions for external organisations. One example is an interactive Narrative Therapy Application that tackles drug addiction for the Singapore Prison Service.

Junhua is researching the designing of interactive learning experience for IT education to cultivate self-driven and motivated students. Sponsored by the SUTD-MIT International Design Centre (IDC), Junhua conceptualised, developed, and executed an academic study titled Integrating Design-Based Learning and Active Learning in Software Engineering Education. He designed and developed contemporary pedagogies, teaching methods, and experiments. The result of his academic study will be published by the American Society of Engineering Education (ASEE) Annual Conference 2013.

Beyond curriculum, Junhua was the founder of the Digital Design and Development Club and the Association for Computer Machinery (ACM) student chapter in SUTD. He was elected as the president and chair respectively. In the first year, the two societies explored project-based learning for programming, targeting students with minimal computing experience.

Junhua believes that being an exemplary self could make one difference; but only through making an exemplary community education can we make a world of difference. Education is the key. He is determined to continue his research on designing inspiring learning experiences through the integration of IT, design and intrinsic motivation.
