Mr Oliver Tan

Entrepreneur of the Year, 2018

There is a saying: "Some paths can't be discovered without getting lost." Oliver Tan is a three-time startup adventurer who is more often "lost" first and found later. In the world of pioneering innovation, disruptions and artificial intelligence, there are often no markers, no road-signs, no landing strip lights. Staying "lost" and "curious" are trademarks that define Oliver's style of entrepreneurship, and quickly finding endpoints that are impactful and profitable.

After almost 18 years in professional career and determined not to retire in a suit, Oliver co-founded ViSenze in 2012, on a quest to make a real difference. Under Oliver's leadership, ViSenze successfully raised USD14M in two rounds of funding from marque investors like Rakuten and emerged as a global leader in retail-tech and computer vision. ViSenze is also working with global retailers like ASOS, H&M, Uniqlo to bridge content and commerce through vision-led Artificial Intelligence which creates an innovative impact on ecommerce.

As a technopreneur, Oliver is passionate about driving real innovations with smart visual technologies and has blazed the trail with several award wins for ViSenze. Focused on transforming commerce, ViSenze was singled out as one of five deep learning companies to watch by VentureBeat, recognised by Interbrand as a global Breakthrough Brand, and won Best AI Product in Retail at CognitionX London 2017. ViSenze was also awarded Most Promising Startup at Emerging Enterprise Awards 2016, and a winner at the National Infocomm Awards for Most Innovative Product in 2015.

Prior to this, he was business head for five years at a leading cyber-security startup (recognised on Gartner Magic Quadrant) until its successful exit. Before that, Oliver held senior roles at media-tech companies in Asia where he led successful digital businesses, and handled M&A transactions.

Oliver earned his Bachelor's degree (Honours) in economics and MBA (Distinction) from Royal Holloway, University of London. A standing member of Forbes Technology Council advocating responsible technology developments, he was named amongst Top 40 individuals who shaped Southeast Asia eCommerce in 2016 by eCommerce IQ, and recognised as Top 10 Innovators & Disruptors by The Peak Singapore in 2017.

When he is not advocating transformation through innovation, Oliver runs long-distances, and is an avid photographer.
